My eight-year-old got so into wiring the hidden magnetic gears that she didn't even ask for screen time. The metal balls really do glide through the sand in these endlessly changing patterns, and it’s been running quietly for hours.

We set it up this afternoon and the magnetic gears are surprisingly satisfying to watch in action. My son kept saying "do it again" every time the pattern changed in the colored sand.

My kid was glued to the spinning magnetic gears for a full hour—the way the balls carve those shifting patterns through the sand is genuinely mesmerizing. Wiring it up together took a little patience, but seeing the hidden mechanism work made it totally worth it.
