The Thames & Kosmos Metal Detector

My 8-year-old had a blast with this on our lawn, and the 6-inch depth detection actually worked on a buried coin. It's sturdy enough for a kid to handle without breaking, which is a huge plus.

I took it to the beach and was impressed it could detect coins and bottle caps buried a few inches down in the sand. The sensitivity dial actually helps narrow down targets, which kept my nephew engaged for almost an hour.

My son found a quarter buried four inches deep in the sand at the beach on his first try with this detector. The adjustable handle makes it easy for him to use, and the audio feedback is clear when it locates something. It's been a fun way to get him outside and exploring.
